The "official" point of access to the comprehensive records of the Scottish census is through Scotlands People. This is the only place where you can view the digitised images. Other commercial sites provide transcripts only.
A valuable complement to the census data is contained in the Valuation Rolls (also held by Scotlands People) This was a distinctively Scottish survey conducted in the middle of each census period from 1875. Although its main purpose was to determine the value of property to enable rates and taxes to be levied, it also recorded both the owner and the occupier of each premises.
