Some people experiment with several different types of family history software before settling on a preference. Others choose one and stick with it because they fear the difficulties of starting again. In fact, moving your data from one program to another can be "relatively" painless.
Legacy provides a number of options for you to import data that you have stored in another program. You access this menu by selecting File > Import.
In most cases you will need the first option GEDCOM file. A GEDCOM is a standard file type used to interchange data between family history programs. You will need to have exported your data in that form from your old program. Users of Family Tree Maker can find some advice of how to create the GEDCOM from that program here. Anyone with an Ancestry Tree can find how to convert it to a GEDCOM here. |
Note: Although you can import a GEDCOM directly into your current Legacy Family File, it is a wise precaution to make the import into a new (empty) file that can then be saved as a Legacy File. The two files can then be combined by a second import using the fourth menu option.
