Censuses of the USA
Nation-wide censuses have been conducted by the US Federal Government every 10 years since 1790. Historical census records are retained by the National Archives and Records Administration. They are made available under commercial arrangements with Ancestry and Find My Past and also (free of charge) through Family Search.
In addition, states have conducted their own limited censuses (usually in the middle of the ten year cycle). Many of these records are also available through Family Search.

The USGenWeb Census Project aims to make a transcription of every Federal census freely available to researchers. This is a massive project for volunteers and is a work in progress.
