Registration of births, marriages and deaths is a responsibility of each state and their on-line information links are shown at left. An overview of the processes can be read at this National Library site. Major subscription databases such as Ancestry and Find My Past have (different) partial copies of the datasets held by the state Registrars. Look for links such as Learn about these records to identify where they have gaps.
