Using Ancestry Library Edition
Send it home while you are at home
It might not be obvious but there are good reasons to use this feature (described in detail below) even when you are accessing a Library Version of Ancestry from home.
When you hit the button and enter your email address, Ancestry creates an online storage space in your name where it stores all your discoveries. What it "sends" you is a link to that space so you can then save a copy of the record to your home computer but it keeps another copy in that on-line storage area for future use.
Even after the world gets back to business as usual and we need to actually visit the Library to use the Library Edition of Ancestry (free), you will still be able to access that on-line collection of previously viewed records FROM HOME (without charge and without an Ancestry account). So when you find an image of a record you need while using Ancestry at home, don't just save it -- "Send it Home" from home.

Sending your finds home
Have you ever begun a session on Ancestry in the library and not realised that you did not bring your USB memory stick until it comes time to save? Ancestry now offers an alternative way to keep your discoveries. You can send them to yourself in an email. Look for the big button as shown below. When you click, it asks for an email address and sends a link there. When you get home, check your email.

The line "View your discoveries" is a hyperlink that connects you to this page.
From here, you can download the image just as though you were back in the library.
UPDATE How long will a link last?
Ancestry suggests that the discoveries you make at the library will be available to view from home for as long as you need them. But some group members report that their 2014 links will no longer work. In fact the document is still available, but its URL is no longer valid because of page rearrangements. To overcome this, go to one of your recent links (or create a new one next time you are at the Library) and scroll to the bottom of the page, where the View All link should recover all your old discoveries. |
