Peter Dunn (who maintains the Australia @ War website) was our guest speaker on the topic Women @ War in Brisbane during WWII. Peter drew on many of the resources displayed on the related pages of his site http://www.ozatwar.com/women/[email protected] with particular reference to events in south-east Queensland.
Peter emphasised that woment contributed through military organisations (including the AWAS, WAAAF and WRANS) and vol_unteer civilian groups (such as the Land Army of agricultural workers and the Women's National Emergency Legion).
Anyone tracking women who enlisted in the military should check the NAA Namesearch and remember to set the category of records correctly (WWII searches only the army; look for separate Navy and Air Force categories).
Remember also that stories in the press about our brave girls on the homefront supporting the boys away fighting were great morale-boosters. So search Trove for some of the terms used in Peter's talk to see wht you can turn up.
The Australian War Memorial also has an extensve photo collection that is worth searching for images of the locations in which your ancestor served or the type of duties she undertook.
Members interested in obtaining their own copies of the material Peter offered fo sale on USB, can check the details of his offer at http://www.ozatwar.com/ozatwaronusb.htm
