Dawn Montgomery gave a very comprehensive presentation on the history and current capabilities of the Ryerson Index and a marvellous insight into the effort required by volunteers like her in establishing and keeping current this exceptional resource. The clean and simple interface allows users to search either by name or by location. Dawn emphasised the importance of checking the coverage of each newspaper to ensure that you don't search records that have not (yet) been indexed, and encouraged all group members to consider becoming an indexer to help the resource continue to grow by filling in those gaps.

Bob outlined the many types of records that might have been created when one of your ancestors died. They are all worth searching for.
Paul gave us an introduction to the world of one-name studies through his experience beginning a project on his Tuppen family. He outlined the expectations of the international coordinating bodies, the Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) and the Surname Society, and their requirements.
He demonstrated that the processes used are the same as for any family history research. And that the pitfalls are similar, including the need to move out of the (exciting) data collecting phase to begin some rigorous organisation and analysis. One-Name Study coordinators also face the challenge of identifying others able and willing to carry on the work at some time in the future. |
