The underlying software was written by a scientist at University College London to display information about the relationships between different types of plants and animals. When he was told how valuable it could be for genealogy, he (and the university) have made it available free with no strings attached.
Simply create an account (supplying just user name, email address and password) and you can create as many trees as you wish; either by adding people individually or uploading a GEDCOM file). You can view an example by clicking here. Note that i have chosen to make that tree publicly visible: your tree is private (visible only to you) until you give someone else permission to view it
There are several "sample trees" on the site for you to see what is possible. It would be almost impossible to represent the inter-connections shown for the British Royal Family in any conventional tree. Click on the tiny image of Victoria (wife of Louis of Battenburg) in the top right corner when the tree opens to see how the scale changes to reveal two more generations. Then click on her grandmother (Queen Victoria) who is now visible to zoom even further back.
