Bob gave a presentation of some key features of Discovering Anzacs (the new National Archives site that has replaced Mapping Our Anzacs) and then demonstrated live how any member of the public (with a free registered account) can add relevant information concerning their ancestors. Anyone who wants to have a go at transcribing Attestation forms can download a text file of the questions to speed the process. Members interested in other sites that accept contributed information will find a list on the page Building their story.
After some lively discussion, we moved on to explore the PROV collection of soldier settler records on the site called Battle to Farm. You can review Bob's short summary or use the very useful help about link on the site. If you find an ancestor listed in these records, you can then go back to Discovering Anzacs and create a link to the soldier settler documents for the benefit of other family members.
The meeting ended with a brief case study of a 1944 flying accident that had actually been witnessed by one of our members in the village of Yardley Gobion. Sadly, the investigation revealed that wartime censorship meant that there was no coverage in the press. However, a search for details of the pilot revealed that the outcome of an official investigation was posted on-line in association with the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.
